Portuguese quad-play operator Meo (Altice Portugal) has launched a new 4K Wi-Fi set-top box and new user interface. The main feature of the ‘Sophia’ STB is that it can be moved to any room in a house without requiring cables or holes in the room.

The new digital receiver will be initially made available to Meo clients with speeds of over 200 Mbps and/or who sign up for packages with at least four services (fixed telephony, TV, mobile telephony and internet).

Customers who have opted for other less expensive tariffs may request to upgrade to the new box, provided they accept to pay €7.50 per month instead of €5.00 that they usually pay for the existing boxes.

The new Sofia box is manufactured by Arris but incorporates wireless technology developed in-house by Altice Labs, which allows users to connect with a 5 GHz router.

In addition, it is prepared for 4K content and allows image upscaling, which emulates 4K, even on devices (screens or TV sets) that do not have 4K.

Alongside the box, all Meo customers will be able to use a new user interface that aims to make content access “faster and more intuitive”. The interface aims to facilitate the search for content by themes or denominations and can serve as an alternative to traditional channel zapping.
