Disney+ acquires Elton John doc

May 20, 2022

Disney+ has acquired an official Elton John documentary that covers the early years of his career right up to his current run of final concerts.

Disney has reportedly paid $30 million (€28.4m) for the production, according to Deadline, and will air the feature in select cinemas and film festivals before it lands on the Disney+ streaming service.

The feature has the working title of Goodbye Yellow Brick Road: The Final Elton John Performances and the Years and is set to feature unseen concert footage of John from the past 50 years, as well as handwritten journals and present-day footage of him and his family. There will also be concert footage from Madison Square Garden, London’s Hyde Park and more, culminating with the singer’s final North American show at Los Angeles’ Dodger Stadium in November.

The production is helmed by director R.J. Cutler and John’s husband David Furnish.

“Elton and I could not think of a better collaborator than R.J. Cutler for a film that represents more than just Elton’s career — it’s his life,” Furnish said. “From the Troubadour to Dodger Stadium, we knew that R.J. would help guide Elton’s story and its many layers in a way that feels authentic and evocative.”
