Globo.com selects Unified Streaming

Globo.com, Internet arm of Brazilian media conglomerate Grupo Globo, relies on Unified Streaming, a leading provider of cross-platform video-streaming technologies, for all VOD delivery and just-in-time packaging.

Grupo Globo owns Brazil’s largest and most successful media companies and is one of the most prominent players in the Latin American media industry. As the Internet arm of the group, Globo.com has the responsibility of streaming all of its content online, and takes pride in having the country’s highest volume of simultaneous video streaming audiences, while also aggregating Brazil’s top web portals to bring users the latest in current events, sports, videos and celebrity news.

The use of Unified Origin for VOD streaming has proven to be the perfect solution for delivering Globo.com’s entire video library to an array of devices including smartphones, tablets, connected TVs, videogame consoles, Chromecast and Apple TV. All of their differing protocols and distinct business needs have posed no problem, thanks to Unified Origin’s flexibility.

Now through just a single deployment, Globo.com can handle HDS with DRM (Adobe Access) or without, HLS, MSS with DRM (PlayReady) or without and MPEG-DASH.

“We chose the Unified Streaming platform because it’s flexible, lightweight and scalable,” says Igor Macaúbas, Product Manager of globo.com’s OVP. “We needed something that wouldn’t be a ‘black box’ solution, but rather that we could build upon and that was simple enough to easily understand the workings of. The Apache/Nginx module is a plus, since we can leverage all of our knowledge on both webservers to make the delivery even more efficient.”

“According to Unified Streaming’s VP of Global Sales Simon Westbroek:  working with Globo.com on this setup is interesting for many reasons. We appreciate the advanced and innovative approach of Globo.com and powering the VOD service of Brazil’s largest broadcaster makes us feel very proud.
