Brexit: Risks for TV subs

June 24, 2016

By Chris Forrester

The UK’s vote to leave the European Union could have dramatic consequences for the country’s pay-TV viewers.

With an exit from the EU would come the abandonment of the various EU-backed ‘Television without Frontiers’ directives, and its follow-up proposals to permit existing national subscribers to view their paid-for programming in foreign countries.

The Television Without Frontiers directive, now part of the formal EU Audio-visual Media Services Directive, also includes its MEDIA programme to support film-makers, and aid in the form of its Creative Europe policy

Also at risk would be the EU-backed regulations to permit Europe-wide data-roaming and fair-prices for cellular telephony usage.
