Online video drives fibre investment

The proliferation of online video services is boosting global broadband subscriptions and provider investment in fibre according to ABI Research.  “Broadband Subscribers Market Data,” found that worldwide fixed broadband subscriber totalled 503 million at the end of 2010 with nearly 48 million subscribers added in the fourth quarter.

South Korea, Hong Kong and France were among the countries and regions with the highest fixed broadband penetration and in these competitive markets broadband operators are trying to gain market share by competitive speed and price offers.

Fibre has become the technology of choice for many current advanced applications such as IPTV and online video and, as a result, is the fastest growing broadband platform. ABI estimates that there will be 71 million fibre broadband subscribers at the end of 2011. At the end of the third quarter of 2010.
