India tops 44m DTH subs

India has hit record subscriber numbers for pay-TV DTH viewing, says its regulator. The Telecom Regulation Authority of India (TRAI) says there were 44.21 million DTH subscribers at December 31st.

There are six major DTH operators slugging it out for viewer loyalty over India, perhaps proving that the combined marketing and sales efforts of the broadcasters is helping all of them gain support.  Cable subscriptions are, in contrast, sluggish.

TRAI also says that there are now 825 privately operated channels now transmitting, with 163 being pure pay-TV channels, and the rest free-to-air.
