Internet TV streaming service Aereo plans to launch its technology in Greater San Antonio region on February 19th. Greater San Antonio includes a 22-county area across Texas. In January 2013, Aereo said that it intended to expand to 22 new US cities beyond its New York initial launch during the course of the year, but fell short of that target, counting New York City, Boston, Atlanta, Miami, Salt Lake City, Houston, Dallas, Denver, Detroit and Baltimore as its initial launch markets, with Cincinnati joining the list on January 21 2014.
Aereo’s announcement follows the company’s confirmation January 7th of an additional infusion of $34 million of funding. Aereo will announce additional launch dates for its expansion cities throughout 2014.
“Aereo loves the Lone Star State and we’re excited to expand our footprint in Texas,” said Aereo CEO and Founder Chet Kanojia, who suggested the service’s cloud-based antenna/DVR technology brought the old-fashioned antenna into the 21st Century, providing consumers access to the over-the-air broadcast signals that belong to them. “It’s a simple and modern way to use an antenna to watch television – the way it should be. Our team is committed to providing first-class technology and customer care to our users and we’re thrilled to bring Aereo to Greater San Antonio.”
Aereo is currently supported on iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch. The Aereo app for Android (currently in beta) is available for download for devices running Android operating system version 4.1 or higher. Aereo is also supported on Chrome, Safari, Internet Explorer 9, Firefox, Opera, AppleTV (via airplay) and Roku platforms.
