Amazon has been offering membership to its Prime Video OTT service for barely six months in India, and it has doubled its subscriber numbers in that time, and according to its Indian boss Nitesh Kripalani subscriber membership is growing “beyond our expectations”.

In an interview with India’s Television Post Kripalani says customer sign-ups for Prime have doubled since Amazon launched Prime Video. He added that Amazon continues to see exponential growth month on month.

Amazon Prime is adding video content specially tailored to the Indian consumer and is also making its first movie, directed by Doug Liman (The Wall). Kripalami says that various other projects are in progress including documentaries, entertainment shows and movies and in various Indian languages.

Eighteen projects have been announced, and others are under consideration and Amazon India has an agreement with Warner Bros.

The service is available on ‘smart’ TVs from LG, Samsung and Sony displays, and also on its own Amazon Fire stick.
