MPs to question Grade

March 28, 2022

By Colin Mann

Lord Michael Grade will appear before the Digital, Culture, Media, and Sport (DCMS) Committee of the UK House of Commons on March 31st for pre-appointment scrutiny following the Government’s announcement that he is the preferred candidate for the post of Ofcom Chair.

He has been announced as the DCMS’s candidate more than two years after his predecessor stepped down. MPs will consider the candidate’s prior experience and priorities in the role, including his strategic vision for the regulator.

Questions could focus on the drawn-out appointment process, which drew criticism for being restarted and repeatedly extended. The Committee has previously commented on these extensions and the DCMS department’s general approach to the process.

Grade may also face questions on the new Online Safety Bill and the powers it gives to Ofcom. Sanctions on Russian propaganda and media could also be considered.
