March 27, 2018

From David Del Valle in Madrid

Telefónica’s pay-TV platform Movistar Plus will quadruple the picture quality of its TV over the coming days with the launch of its new 4K STB.

The new device will allow up to 4,000 pixels in horizontal resolution with UHD quality equipped with a HDR system.

The launch is seen as a definitive boost to the 4K market in Spain, with plans to sell 4K TV sets on a grand scale (last year, the rise in sales of 4K TV sets was 350 per cent, according to Spanish daily El Economista).

Movistar plans to air more 4K content on its channels. Currently the platform is only offering 4K content in sports. Other pay-TV operators including Vodafone, Orange and Euskaltel are also relying on 4K content to boost subscriptions.
