Channel 5 scores Stormy Daniels doc

May 21, 2024

Channel 5 has secured the first UK exclusive rights to air documentary Stormy – a documentary telling the story of Stormy Daniels in her own words. The programme is produced by Sarah Gibson and Erin Lee Carr, the duo behind the hit documentary Britney vs Spears.

Stormy delves into the compelling and controversial story of Daniels, offering an unprecedented look into her life and the events that catapulted her into the global spotlight. With their signature investigative style, Gibson and Carr provide an in-depth exploration of the personal and political implications of Daniels’ journey. The film offers an intimate look behind the scenes as Daneils navigates her roles as a mother, an artist, and an advocate striving to reinvent herself while contending with the explosive revelation that shook her life five years ago. Daniels recounts her story, sharing pivotal events that have etched her into American history, along with the repercussions she has endured over the years.

The film is executive produced by Emmy Award-winning Judd Apatow of Apatow Productions alongside Emmy Award-winning Sara Bernstein and Meredith Kaulfers from Imagine Documentaries. Emelia Brown also serves as producer.

Damian O’Hara, Acquisitions Manager at Channel 5, commented: “Bringing UK viewers the first broadcast of Stormy builds on Channel 5’s strong tradition of offering audiences topical and compelling factual content. The unique access that the team behind the documentary gained to help tell Stormy’s story makes it a timely and thought-provoking watch.”

Gibson added: “When we began making this film, Stormy made us aware that there was approximately 100 hours of archived footage shot by herself, a journalist by the name of Denver Nicks, a filmmaker Bob Rose, and a source that cannot be publicly named. The footage encompassed the years 2006 and 2007 when she first met Trump and later footage shot in 2018, 2019 and 2023. Stormy nor any of the cinematographers had a say in what we used from that footage or how it was edited. Stormy trusted that we were telling an honest story focused on her emotional journey over the last five years and of the various individuals who had taken advantage of and wronged her. Denver Nicks, who is not a professional documentarian, and Stormy developed a brief romantic relationship in 2018, which was divulged in the film. Denver stopped filming when his romantic relationship with Stormy began. We decided not to focus on this brief relationship in the film and instead devote screen time to the important history that was unfolding.”

The film was acquired from Blue Ant Studios, which has worldwide licence rights for the documentary.
