Fae Pictures announces Streams Flow From A River

March 30, 2023

Canadian scripted production company Fae Pictures has announced the international premiere of premium drama series Streams Flow From A River (6×14’) at Canneseries, following its selection for the festival’s Official Short Form Competition for 2023.

It is the first Canadian series to be helmed by an all-Asian writers’ room and 75 per cent East Asian crew led by producer Shant Joshi (Framing Agnes, Porcupine Lake), who is selected for MIPTV’s Producers to Watch 2023 and will be attending the invitation-only MIP x CanneseriesConnections for leading figures in international TV drama.

The screening will take place on the April 18th during the second day of the MIPTV Conference.

Created by writer and director Christopher Yip (FISH BOY), this unique series brings forward the invisible struggles that Chinese Canadian immigrant families face while trying to make a home in the West.

The series will be available to watch in Canada on Apple TV and Prime Video with Super Channel Fuse from April 1st, followed by a screening at Canneseries on April 18th at Espace Miramar.

With nods to Asian cinema films like Edward Yang’s Yi Yi and modern English-language dramas like I May Destroy You, Streams Flow From A River uses the web series format to deconstruct one family’s history to break down the complex tenements that these families are built on and find a way to heal.

The six episodes revolve around the Chow Family, who dreamed of owning land and placed their bets on a laundromat in the tiny rural town of Frank, Alberta. When a freak snowstorm traps the dysfunctional family together in their hometown, they are forced to confront events from a decade ago that tore them all apart.

Through the lens of one family, Streams Flow From a River shines a spotlight on the history of Chinese immigrants in Canada, who since the 1880s have endured and prospered in the rural Canadian heartland working jobs nobody else wanted: owning restaurants, liquor stores, and laundromats.

Shant Joshi, President of Fae Pictures says “Streams Flow From A River is a proof-of-concept for the progressive strategies that we have advocated for in the Canadian and global screen sectors: authenticity being our North star for high-quality content, with cast and crew who connect with the story to go above and beyond to bring their best work on screen, and connecting that content with audiences who understand the experiences of our characters as a foundation to build intrigue and word-of-mouth. We are eternally grateful to the hard work of showrunner Christopher Yip and the cast and crew behind the production, as well as the team at Canneseries for recognising the quality of the series. We feel privileged to be part of a moment in the telling of ground-breaking Asian American stories, from Pachinko to Everything Everywhere All At Once to Riceboy Sleeps, to name a few.”

Christopher Yip, Creator and Showrunner of Streams Flow From A River says “My hope is that through this series we can air out the dirty laundry within our community on the topics that are taboo – such as homophobia and alcoholism – so that through having these conversations we will be able to move towards healing. I’m thankful to Canneseries for recognising this project and the nomination for the Short Form Competition.”
