WBU appoints 2 new chairpersons

The World Broadcasting Unions (WBU) has announced two new incoming chairpersons for its committees.

Bassil Zoubi is the 2024/2025 Chair of the WBU Technical Committee, from the Arab States Broadcasting Union. Zoubi began his career as a transmission engineer for Jordan Radio & Television before joining the Arab States Broadcasting Union in 1994. Since 2016, he has served as ASBU’s Director of Technology, which has enabled him to work on new technologies with the United Nations’ International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and were active in news & sport coverage and was part of the Arab States digital migration on different stages.

“I believe the union’s cooperation will serve the union’s goals as well as the individual broadcasters around the globe through sharing knowledge, expertise and setting the best broadcasters’ norms,” commented Zoubi “Thus, the WBU will ensure that we are all better equipped to meet the challenges and opportunities of the future”.

Deborah Steele is the new Chair of the WBU’s News Committee. Steele is the Director of News at the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU), with responsibility for leading the ABU’s international video news exchange Asiavision, organising the annual Global News Forum and providing newsroom training, capacity building and consultancy services. She is a former Australian Broadcasting Corporation news executive, editor and journalist.

Steele said: “The WBU plays an important role in uniting public service broadcasters around the world, sharing expertise, improving our ability to meet key service obligations and strengthening our response to issues of mutual concern. I am delighted to have the opportunity to serve in this role, enhancing the role of the WBU News Committee and promoting the needs and activities of sister unions.”
